Preparation for a Medieval Joust - C. L. Doughty

Preparation for a Medieval Joust, 1949, watercolour
1913-1985.
Cecil Langley Doughty was an illustrator who worked on a number of comics, such as Thriller Comic, Starflash, Challenger, Top Spot, and School Friend. His debonair style was ideal for the swashbuckling costume/action strip, as this vibrant joust scene testifies. From an early age Doughty admired the work of Charles Brock and Hugh Thomson, and their influence is evident in his work.

All illustrations by Walter Crane.
Just a small note that the first two books were scanned by myself. I have a large collection of Mrs Molesworth books who, though somewhat dated, is still a good read. And she choose her illustrators well.
