Annie French - 'The Bride heeds not hyr garments but hyr deere brydegroomes face:'

signed 'ANNIE FRENCH' (lower left) and inscribed with title (upper margin)
pencil, pen and black ink, watercolour, heightened with touches of bodycolour, gold and silver, on buff paper
8¼ x 8¼ in.

Annie French studied at the Glasgow School of Art alongside fellow student Jessie Marion King whose influence on French's graphic style can be seen. Both artists worked in a unique, highly-wrought, decorative style, depicting ethereal figures in a lyrical, floral world. French exhibited at the Royal Academy frequently between 1904 and 1924 often portraying brides or maidens such as in The Garland (1906), The Forest Beloved (1905), or Scottish ballads like Can Ye Sew Cushions? (c. 1900).
