Helen Allingham - Children at the edge of a bluebell field, a cottage beyond

signed 'H. Allingham' (lower right)
pencil and watercolour with scratching out on paper
12 x 9¼ in.

Allingham's work shows the influence of Birket Foster and Frederick Walker. In 1874 she married the Irish poet William Allingham through whom she was introduced to John Ruskin, who became an admirer of her work.

The present watercolour probably depicts the woods near their Surrey home; with a carpet of bluebells interspersed with anemonies and gorse.
